Crimes against people in Alexandria went down 31% in 2025 compared to 2024, marking the first year-round crime reduction in Alexandria since 2021.
Part 1 crimes include homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and auto theft. There were 3,400 Part 1 incidents in Alexandria in 2025 — a decrease of 31% over the 4,929 incidents reported in 2024, according to preliminary statistics released on the city’s crime dashboard.
Alexandria Police Department Chief Tarrick McGuire will update City Council in an upcoming meeting with finalized results, APD told ALXnow. In December, McGuire also said he hopes to host a half-day public safety summit with community stakeholders during the first quarter of 2026.
In the meantime, data shows across-the-board decreases in all Part 1 crime categories, including the most common incidents, larcenies.
Larceny crimes went down 28.4% from 2024 to 2025, with 2,815 incidents recorded last year, accounting for 82% of total Part 1 crimes in 2025.
The city also saw a 40% decrease in aggravated assaults, a 26% reduction in robberies, a 39% reduction in burglaries and a 47% reduction in auto thefts.
Homicides decreased from four to two, and APD reported five rape incidents last year, as opposed to nine in 2024.
The crime reduction comes as APD has struggled with staffing and compensation and as the police department’s union is working with the city to increase officer pay in a new collective bargaining agreement.
