Hundreds of Alexandrians watched and cheered as hometown racing champion Noah Lyles won a bronze medal in the 200 meters in the Paris Olympics on Thursday.

Letsile Tebogo of Botswana won the race with a time of 19.46 seconds, U.S. sprinter Kenny Bednarek earned silver with 19.52 and Lyles got third with 19.70.

July was a good month for giving in Alexandria, as more than 36,500 pounds of food was collected in Volunteer Alexandria‘s second annual food drive for ALIVE!.

There were dozens of collection points for food in last month’s community-wide effort to help the food bank. Last year’s effort raise more than 25,000 pounds.

Alexandria’s Christian Tabash rowed to a bronze medal in the men’s eight final in the Paris Olympics on Saturday (Aug.3).

The 25-year-old and his seven American teammates (and a coxswain) clocked in with a time of 5:25:28 in the 2,000-meter race along the Seine River, behind the Netherlands’ 5:23:92 and Great Britain’s gold medal-winning performance of 5:22:88.

An adult male suspected of a felony robbery in Arlington is in custody after allegedly crashing a stolen vehicle into several vehicles in the Wharf area in D.C., according to the Alexandria Police Department.

APD put out a release Friday detailing the incident. According to APD, a license plate reader flagged the car the suspect allegedly drove in Alexandria’s West End as stolen.

Two watch parties have been organized in the city to witness the fastest man on the planet, Alexandria native Noah Lyles, race in the 100 meter and 200 meter finals in the Paris Olympics.

It’s the second consecutive Olympics that a watch party will be held at Alexandria City High School (ACHS). The 26-year-old Lyles graduated from ACHS in 2016, and won the bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics in the 200m. He’s a three-time world champion in the race, winning in 2019, 2022 and 2023.

A 15-year-old Alexandria boy was arrested after a series of armed carjackings and another vehicle theft in the West End last month, according to the Alexandria Police Department.

There were armed carjackings on July 9 and July 16 in the area of Northampton Road and Strutfield Lane, according to a recently released search warrant affidavit.

With nine candidates running for nine spots, there’s no contest in the upcoming Alexandria School Board elections. Still, residents have a chance to meet the incumbents and newcomers in a series of meet-and-greets.

The first of these meet-and-greets with the public will be held by District A candidates on Saturday, Aug. 10 with School Board Chair Michelle Rief, Board Member Tim Beaty and Ryan Reyna.

A plan to build 110 townhouses on the southeast portion of the sprawling WestEnd development is heading to the Alexandria Planning Commission.

City Council approved the four million square-foot redevelopment at the former home of Landmark Mall in 2021, with blocks L and M reserved for for-sale residential development. Blocks L and M, along Duke Street near N. Van Dorn Street, take up more than 100,000 square feet.
