Amidst a number of recent proposals for new apartment buildings in Alexandria’s Carlyle neighborhood, the developer of a previously approved large senior living project on Eisenhower Avenue is asking the city for a three-year extension for its construction.

On May 6, Carlyle Plaza LLC is asking the Planning Commission for a three year extension of its previously approved special use permit (SUP) for construction of The John Carlyle Center Health and Wellness, a 225-unit residential building for the elderly and office building at 1900 Eisenhower Avenue and 765-789 John Carlyle Street.

In the market for a pristine Fender guitar? There are two for sale at rock-bottom prices at the upcoming MV Big Flea, an annual fundraiser and community yard sale for the Mount Vernon Community School in Del Ray.

The annual flea market is back on April 26 (Saturday) in the gym of Mount Vernon Recreation Center (2701 Commonwealth Avenue). Organizers have been gathering donated treasures at the Del Ray Farmers’ Market and have several nearby storage units filled to capacity.

A 41-year-old El Salvadoran woman convicted in 2020 of misdemeanor assault, was arrested Feb. 25 by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Roxana Beatriz Ayala-Duran was found guilty in the Alexandria General District Court of misdemeanor assault, with 30 days in prison suspended. She also had unsupervised probation, according to court records.

A rapturous applause followed after a James K. Polk Elementary School teacher was officially named the Virginia Regional Teacher of the Year.

In front of an assembly of third graders, teacher Sharon Phox was presented the honor by Lisa Coons, Virginia’s superintendent for public instruction, as well as Alexandria City Public Schools leadership and her family.

A plan to convert a former motel on N. Washington Street into a multifamily building and a townhouse is heading to the Planning Commission early next month.

Maryland-based PT Blooms is asking the city to approve plans to redevelop the property at 802 and 808 N. Washington Street into The Whitley — Phase 2, a 48-unit building with one-to-three bedroom condos.  That’s the former Old Towne Motel property, which has been closed for years.

Alexandria’s City Hall and Market Square (301 King Street) are on track for renovation, and the city government wants to loosen zoning restrictions around the project.

At its public hearing on Saturday (March 15), the City Council will discuss a round of changes to Alexandria’s zoning ordinance that would “increase regulatory flexibility” for the City Hall renovation project, according to a staff memo.

A special use permit to allow for the operation of a new garden center in Del Ray is heading to City Council this Saturday (March 15).

Jay Portlance, owner of Del Ray Hardware (2003 Mount Vernon Avenue), wants to soon open the Del Ray Farmhouse Market and Garden right across the street at 1913 Mount Vernon Avenue.

The Alexandria Democratic Committee isn’t happy that Virginia Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner recently voted for a number of President Donald Trump’s new cabinet secretaries.

At its March meeting last week, the ADC passed a resolution asking the Democratic lawmakers to withhold future support in all forms.

Some big changes are being proposed at 400 King Street in Old Town.

The building takes over an entire city block and is currently home to The Alexandrian Old Town Hotel at 480 King Street and Southern restaurant King & Rye. The latter is undergoing an interior renovation and is serving a limited menu through the end of March.

Alexandria City Manager Jim Parajon will be able to order around all City employees under his purview, not just department heads, if City Council approves one of his latest requests at their meeting on Tuesday (March 11).

At that meeting, Parajon is asking Council to amend and approve an ordinance to “increase interdepartmental enforcement flexibility,” as it’s described in a staff memo.

After years in limbo, a parking lot along Alexandria’s waterfront could be turned into an outdoor dining area for a local restaurant.

Mai Thai (6 King Street) last month submitted a request to the city to license four city-owned spaces in the eight-space parking lot in the rear of the building.
