Residents will unofficially bid farewell to the summer season during Labor Day weekend, which will also bring some closures and schedule changes to services in Alexandria.
Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 7, resulting in an extended holiday weekend for many employees and students. All City of Alexandria government offices will be closed for the Labor Day observance on Sept. 7.
Additional holiday closures on Sept. 7 include Alexandria City Public Schools, Alexandria General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, Court Service Unit, Circuit Court, the Clerk of Circuit Court, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, Alexandria Library locations, recreation centers, nature centers and the Virginia DMV. The Alexandria Health Department’s clinics will close at 12 p.m. on Sept. 4 and remain closed Sept. 7.

While Alexandria has no major festivals for Labor Day, businesses, landmarks and other organizations have regularly scheduled events over the holiday weekend, and pools will be open for their last days before closing for the season. Old Town Pool and Warwick Pool will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Sept. 7, Minnie Howard Aquatics Facility will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Great Waves Waterpark will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Gadsby’s Tavern Museum and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum will be open from 1-5 p.m., and all other Historic Alexandria museums will be closed on Sept. 7. The Torpedo Factory Art Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sept. 7 and will close early at 5 p.m. on Sept. 6.
DASH bus service will run on a Saturday-Sunday schedule on Sept. 7, and Lines 102, 103, and 104 will not operate. The King Street Trolley continues to run every 15 minutes, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, including holidays, from King Street Metro to City Hall/Market Square.
On Metro, the Yellow, Orange, Silver and Blue Lines will run normally over the weekend. On the Green Line, College Park-U of Md and Greenbelt stations will be closed, and free shuttle buses will replace trains between Hyattsville Crossing and Greenbelt. The last day of the Red Line shutdown between North Bethesda and Friendship Heights will be Sept. 6. Metrorail will run weekend service on Sept. 7 between 6 a.m. and midnight.
The Virginia Department of Transportation will lift most highway work zones and temporary lane closures on interstates and other major roads in Virginia from noon on Friday, Sept. 4 until noon on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Holiday travelers can use VDOT’s travel trends map to see historic data on when highways and interstates become the busiest over Labor Day weekend.
The Alexandria Police Department will not enforce parking restrictions at meters and residential parking permit districts on Sept. 7, although temporary no-parking signs will be enforced. The city’s impound lot is closed on weekends and the Sept. 7 holiday and will accrue fees on weekends but not holidays.
Trash, recycling and curbside food waste collection will be delayed by one day during the week of Sept. 7. Monday collections will fall on Tuesday, Tuesday collections will be moved to Wednesday, and so on.
