A road closure and pedestrian detour for a Virginia Railway Express rail project around Alexandria Union Station (110 Callahan Drive) will resume starting tomorrow (Thursday).
King Street will be closed between Russell Road and Daingerfield Road starting 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 18 until around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 24. Commonwealth Avenue will remain open with an alternating single lane directed by flaggers. Sunset Drive will remain open. A detour is available via Callahan Drive, Duke Street and Diagonal Road.
The sidewalk between King Street and the Alexandria Union Station tunnel is also closed on both sides under the bridge. The stairs from the east platform of Alexandria Union Station to King Street remain closed until the end of all construction. A pedestrian detour is available via Commonwealth Avenue and Sunset Drive.
VRE will run its trains on an S+ schedule due to the work from Monday, June 22 to Wednesday, June 24. VRE will not operate on Friday, June 19 due to the Juneteenth holiday. VRE says commuters heading to Alexandria Union Station should plan for an extra 15 to 20 minutes of travel or transfer to or from the adjacent King Street-Old Town Metro station.
Metro service is not impacted by the construction work since it operates on a different track than VRE and Amtrak.

This is the final of three King Street closures in May and June for VRE’s project. VRE is working on replacing rail bridges over King Street and Commonwealth Avenue and making upgrades at Alexandria Union Station. Other parts of the project include reconstructing station platforms, constructing new ADA-compliant elevators, replacing the existing pedestrian tunnel and stairs connecting to the center platform, and removing the existing at-grade pedestrian crossing.
The project is being coordinated with the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority’s Alexandria Fourth Track Project and the city’s King Street and Commonwealth improvements. The Long Bridge Project is also underway to boost rail capacity between D.C. and Virginia.
