The Alexandria Police Department and Alexandria Fire Department responded to an apparent accidental shooting in a West End apartment this afternoon (May 28).
Around 3:10 p.m., police and fire were called to an apartment in the 100 block of W. Taylor Run Parkway. A 33-year-old man advised dispatchers that he accidentally shot himself in the left hand.
According to radio dispatches, the man told dispatchers he is a D.C. officer and that he put the gun on the counter after the accidental shooting.
“It’s a D.C. court officer. They were accidentally cleaning their gun, and it went off,” an AFD dispatcher said.
APD spokesperson Tracy Walker told ALXnow the accidental discharge was an isolated incident. The man has a non-life-threatening injury and was taken to receive medical care.
“There is no ongoing threat to the public related to this incident, and no other injuries occurred,” Walker said.
The APD spokesperson could not confirm the man’s job, saying the department does not disclose employment for privacy purposes.
