The Virginia Railway Express is postponing the next of its road closures to accommodate rail bridge work near Alexandria Union Station (110 Callahan Drive).
Construction on the two replacement rail bridge spans over King Street and Commonwealth Avenue has been rescheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Friday, May 29, running through 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 2. King Street will be fully closed between Russell Road and Daingerfield Road during construction. Traffic will be detoured to Duke Street, and Commonwealth Avenue will remain open with a single travel lane with alternating traffic directed by flaggers. Sunset Drive will remain fully open.
The sidewalk between King Street and the Alexandria Union Station tunnel will be closed on both sides under the bridge from 7 p.m. Friday, May 29 to 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 2. The sidewalk along Commonwealth Avenue will remain open. Detour signage will direct pedestrians. The stairs from the east platform of Alexandria Union Station to King Street will remain closed until all construction is complete.
The postponement means no road closure will occur between 7 a.m. Friday, May 15 and 10 p.m. Monday, May 18. King Street and Commonwealth Avenue will remain fully open until 7 p.m. Friday, May 29. VRE is tentatively planning another road closure from the evening of Thursday, June 11 to Monday, June 15.
Metro service is not expected to be affected during construction.
VRE’s project to replace rail bridges over King Street and Commonwealth Avenue and make upgrades at Alexandria Union Station is being coordinated with the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority’s Alexandria Fourth Track Project and the city’s King Street and Commonwealth improvements. The Long Bridge Project is also underway to boost rail capacity between D.C. and Virginia.
