Mount Vernon Avenue bridge fully closing for construction starting Saturday

The Mount Vernon Avenue/Arlington Ridge Road bridge between Arlington and Alexandria will be closed during upcoming construction beginning Saturday (May 16).

The bridge will be fully closed in both directions during construction hours from Saturday, May 16 to Saturday, May 23. Closures will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. There will be no construction or bridge closure on Sunday, May 17.

Crews will install five steel girders on the east side of the bridge during the closure. Traffic will be detoured to Glebe Road and Richmond Highway (Route 1).

“It’s important that you seek, if possible, additional or alternative travel routes, because there will likely be travel delays,” Mayor Alyia Gaskins said in a video update on social media. “We are working as closely as possible with Arlington County to figure out ways that we might minimize disruptions and keep traffic flowing as best as possible.”

Due to the construction, Metrobus routes A11/A12 will suspend four stops along Arlington Ridge Road/Mount Vernon Avenue during the work. Buses will be detoured west of the bridge via West Glebe Road and South Glebe Road.

The project began in summer 2025 and is expected to be completed in summer 2027. During the current phase, expected to wrap up in October, crews are demolishing and reconstructing the west side of the bridge. The west side is closed to all traffic, shifting vehicles and pedestrians to the east side.

The bridge project is being led by Arlington County in coordination with the City of Alexandria. The two localities also collaborated on the replacement of the Glebe Road bridge, which was completed in 2023.
