Morning Notes for January 13, 2026

On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Jan. 13, 1874, a fire broke at the Carlyle House. The fire was concentrated on the roof near a chimney but firefighters extinguished it before any serious damage occurred. After construction of a large hotel in front of the 18th century home built for Alexandria founder John Carlyle on N. Fairfax Street, the once elegant structure was neglected and often used as a transient boarding house, resulting in unsafe conditions.” [Historic Alexandria]

Assault Weapons Ban Seeks New Path — “Several Democratic policymakers have high hopes for a bill to crack down on assault weapons once Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger takes office. Legislation to outlaw any sales or transfers of new ‘assault firearms’ passed both chambers in each of the last two legislative sessions, but was vetoed upon reaching the desk of Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin. Now armed with a Democratic trifecta, however, Del. Dan Helmer (D-10) has once again authored a piece of legislation to make such sales a Class 1 misdemeanor, which carries a maximum penalty of a year in jail.” [ARLnow]

More Issues To Watch In General Assembly — “At the top of the docket are four proposed amendments to the Virginia Constitution that, if approved again by both chambers in the coming weeks, would go before voters statewide later this year. They would protect abortion access, enshrine same-sex marriage, automatically restore voting rights to felons who have completed their sentences and allow a rare mid-decade redistricting ahead of the 2026 congressional elections.” [Virginia Mercury]
