JUST IN: Alexandria Democrats schedule firehouse primary to replace Sen. Ebbin

Alexandria Democrats have announced a firehouse primary to replace State Sen. Adam Ebbin (D-39), after he announced his resignation this week to fulfill a role in Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger’s administration.

The primary will be held from 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m. this Tuesday, Jan. 13, according to the Alexandria Democratic Committee — less than a week out from Ebbin’s Jan. 7 announcement. ADC announced the primary over social media around 11 p.m. Friday.

Polling will take place at the Charles E. Beatley, Jr. Central Library (5005 Duke Street) and the Charles Houston Recreation Center (901 Wythe Street). Voters requiring accommodation will be able to vote curbside. Voters must live and be registered to vote in District 39 and bring identification.

Additionally, the Aurora Hills Library will host polling from 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m. at 735 18th Street S. for Democrats in the Arlington portion of the district, county Democrats announced Saturday afternoon. This includes the Crystal City and Pentagon City neighborhoods.

Voters in Fairfax County will be able to vote at John Calvin Presbyterian Church (6531 Columbia Pike) in Annandale, ADC announced Sunday afternoon.

As of Sunday, ADC has confirmed four candidates: Del. Elizabeth Bennett-Parker (D-5), former Del. Mark Levine (D-45), Charles Sumpter, a senior executive at World Wildlife Fund, and former Vice Mayor Amy Jackson.

On Friday, Sen. L. Louise Lucas, president pro tempore of the upper house of the legislature, issued the writ to hold the special election on Tuesday, Feb. 10. The candidate filing deadline was set for 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14.

Ebbin will be fulfilling a role as senior advisor at the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority.

A host of local and state leaders have voiced support for Bennett-Parker this week, including Mayor Alyia Gaskins, Vice Mayor Sarah Bagley, incoming Gov. Spanberger and Ebbin himself.

This is a developing story.
