‘Five-star dive bar’ from D.C. plans new location at former Mystic BBQ & Grill in Old Town

A popular pub in D.C.’s Dupont Circle neighborhood is expanding across the river to Old Town, bringing its self-described “five-star dive bar” approach.

The Commodore is planning a second location at 220 N. Lee Street, owners Rob Van de Graaff and Steve Kim announced yesterday (Thursday). The pub will replace Mystic BBQ & Grill, which closed in late November, after about a year and a half in business. Before Mystic, the space hosted Myron Mixon’s Pitmaster BBQ.

The Commodore team hopes to open the new dive sometime in March.

“Old Town has the kind of neighborhood energy we’ve always loved,” Van de Graaff said in a release. “We’re excited to bring our Five-Star Dive Bar to Alexandria while keeping everything our regulars love about The Commodore … and we might have a couple of surprises exclusive to Old Town as well.”

According to the owners, the new pub will have the same type of pub food, drinks and programs like trivia and bingo as its 17th Street NW location in D.C. Also, Chicago tavern-style pizza will be added to the menu.

More details about the new location are forthcoming closer to opening day.

The Commodore had originally opened in D.C.’s Logan Circle area in 2016 before closing in 2019 and relocating to Dupont Circle in 2021.
