UPDATED: Firefighters recover contractor stuck in sewer near AlexRenew wastewater plant

Firefighters from Alexandria and Arlington recovered a contractor who was unable to exit a sewer while working in Eisenhower East yesterday afternoon (Thursday).

The Alexandria Fire Department’s Engine 205 and Battalion 201 responded to 1500 Eisenhower Avenue to rescue the 32-year-old man, who was reportedly trapped in the sewer, according to city dispatches around 4:15 p.m.

The contractor was completing routine work about 15 feet underground when his oxygen meter stopped working, AlexRenew Director of Communications Matt Robertson told ALXnow.

“A safety protocol was no longer in place because the oxygen meter went off,” Robertson said.

When the man’s colleagues attempted to lift him out of the sewer, their hoist was broken. They called first responders to recover the man “out of an abundance of caution.”

Crews evacuated the man using a ladder alongside the Arlington County Fire Department’s Rescue 102 unit. The man was said to be “alert and oriented” upon rescue and given a medical evaluation.
