Annual Christmas tree and menorah lighting in Del Ray seeks volunteers this Sunday

A holiday tradition is around the corner in Del Ray, and some festive helpers are needed.

The 15th annual Del Ray Holiday Season Kick-Off starts at 5 p.m. this Sunday at Pat Miller Neighborhood Square on 2311 Mount Vernon Avenue. The event features holiday songs performed by the Alexandria Children’s Chorus, appearances by city leaders and even Santa Claus himself.

Volunteers are needed to hand out song sheets, assist with setup and cleanup and place thousands of luminarias along Mount Vernon Avenue in memory of Nancy Dunning, known as the “Queen of Del Ray.”

This year’s 36-foot-tall tree was donated by Bill Blackburn and “Mango” Mike Anderson of the Homegrown Restaurant Group. The holiday tree is Del Ray’s largest yet, with decorations placed by developer Windmill Hill.

Event organizer Gayle Reuter said it’s a special time of year for the neighborhood.

“Families are able to go and see their neighbors, and everyone is able to sing their favorite holiday songs,” Reuter said. “The excitement of this countdown to see a beautiful real tree lit up is indescribable.”

Interested volunteers can sign up on Visit Del Ray’s email list to receive more information about available shifts.

This year’s event is also a fundraiser and toy drive. Carpenter’s Shelter is accepting donations of thermal wear and toiletries like toothpaste and deodorant. The Alexandria Sheriff’s Office is also gathering toys for its annual toy drive.
