There have been 61 deaths due to the coronavirus in Alexandria, and there are now or have been 3,130 cases, according to the Virginia Department of Health.
The city surpassed the 3,000 case mark with last week, and the most recent fatality was reported on Friday, but occurred months ago, according to the city. The victim was a man in his 50s.
“COVID-19 is spread by people whether or not they have symptoms, and AHD estimates that nearly 10% of infected Alexandrians have required hospitalization,” notes a city release. “Everyone must do their part to stop the spread: maintain at least 6 feet of distance from others, wear a mask, and carry and use hand sanitizer.”
There have also been 284 total hospitalizations since the first case was reported on March 11, according to VDH. It is not clear how many city residents have recovered from the virus.
Alexandria trails behind its more populated regional neighbors like Arlington County, which has reported 3,246 cases and 135 deaths; Fairfax County with 17,070 cases and 535 deaths; and Loudoun County with 5,528 cases and 115 deaths. Statewide, there are 2,385 COVID-related fatalities throughout Virginia, and there are or have been 107,421 cases.
Latino Residents Hit Hardest
Latino residents in the city have been the most impacted with 1,565 reported cases, followed by Black residents with 599 cases, white residents with 588 cases, Asian or Pacific Islander residents with 102 cases, 59 cases classified as “other” and three native American cases.
There are or have been 1,614 women (with 33 deaths) and 1,505 men (with 28 deaths) in Alexandria with the virus.

Testing Update
There have been 26,828 PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests administered in Alexandria so far, and the city’s seven-day positivity rate shows a 5.6% infection rate of those tested. There have also been 3,898 antibody tests in Alexandria.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!
The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!
