There are or have been 2,456 cases of COVID-19 in Alexandria and there have been no new deaths this month.
The number of cases has trickled upward through July, and on July 10, 20 new cases were reported. The city is no longer providing COVID-19 updates on weekends, and since Friday there have been 17 new cases and fatalities remain at 57.
Additionally, the city recently created a map of COVID-19 testing sites, and continues to recommend that residents stay home and wear face masks when out in public.
“Everyone is safest at home,” the city said in a press release. “This is especially true for those in high-risk populations (such as older adults, persons living in long-term care facilities, and those with serious underlying medical conditions). If you must go out, please maintain 6 feet of distance from others, wear a cloth face covering, and always carry hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol with you. Everyone must do their part to stop the spread.”
There are now 1,968 coronavirus-related deaths in Virginia and there are or have been 71,642 cases statewide.
It is not clear how many city residents have recovered since the first case was announced on March 11. Senior citizens have been severely affected by the virus, and residents above the age of 50 make up all but one of the fatalities.
There have been 14 outbreaks in the city accounting for 244 associated cases, including 187 health care workers who have contracted the virus.
There have been 17,385 PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests administered in Alexandria so far, and the city’s seven-day positivity rate shows an 8.3% infection rate of those tested. There have also been 2,698 antibody tests performed in Alexandria.

Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!
The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!
