Alexandria’s SnowReport website shows that — as of 11:30 a.m. — many of Alexandria’s major roads are in normal or passable condition, though most of the secondary streets remain snow-covered.
Route 1 and Washington Street through Old Down are in “normal” condition. A few major roads in the city are a mix of normal/passable, including:
- Seminary Road
- King Street
- Duke Street
- Eisenhower Avenue
- Braddock Road
- Mount Vernon Avenue
However, most of the secondary streets around the city are still listed as snow covered on the city website.
Snow is still falling in Alexandria and drivers are generally discouraged from driving in these conditions unless absolutely necessary. Alexandria’s DASH buses are operating on a modified schedule.
According to the City of Alexandria:
To clear snow and ice from this large network of streets and sidewalks, the City uses a multi-pronged strategy:
- Roads are plowed by priority. Snow emergency routes are plowed first, followed by secondary routes, intermediate routes, and residential streets. The City’s SnowReport tracking system allows residents to view plowing priorities, check the status of individual streets, and submit concerns.
- Clearing sidewalks, driveways, and entrances is the responsibility of the adjacent property owner, occupant, community association, or business. Time limits for clearing snow are determined by the storm’s severity or storm level. Residents are encouraged to subscribe to eNews alerts or check City social media accounts for information on storm level determinations.
- Select roads are pretreated with brine when low temperatures or precipitation are possible, but rain is not expected. This preventive anti-icing measure—along with the City’s usual snow and ice prevention and removal techniques—helps keep roads safer.
Residents, businesses, and visitors can take the following steps to support the City’s snow removal efforts and help snow crews and emergency responders during winter storms and other weather emergencies:
- Do not park on snow emergency routes.
- Keep shovels and either salt or sand handy.
- Avoid shoveling snow into the street.
- Sign up to become a Snow Buddy and help your neighbors who are unable to shovel snow.
- Check on neighbors who may need assistance.
