Less than two years after opening its doors in Del Ray, Charlie’s on the Avenue is closing.
Owners Jeremy Barber and Justus Frank told customers that the family-friendly restaurant at 1501 Mount Vernon Ave. will be shutting down after this weekend. The last day will be Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 2).
“We appreciate all the support you have shown us and continue to show us at our sister restaurants (Live Oak Restaurant and The Garden),” Barber and Frank announced on their website. “As we close Charlie’s a new chapter begins for us at Live Oak. Look for a new menu equipped with some of Charlie’s favorites, a few new looks, and a few familiar faces.”
The restaurant, which served American fare, plus beer and wine, was previously home to FireGlies, which closed in 2017 after 15 years in business.
At the end of the note to customers, Barber and Frank quoted Chef Gordon Ramsay, who said: “I don’t like looking back. I’m always constantly looking forward. I’m not the one to sort of sit and cry over spilled milk. I’m too busy looking for the next cow.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!
The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!
What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
