🚨 You need to know

You might want to take things a little slower when you drive south of Alexandria from now on.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced that the speed limit will be reduced from 45 mph to 35 mph from the Alexandria city limits down to Fort Belvoir.

The new signage is set to go up on May 23.

The VDOT release is below:

On May 23, the speed limit on Richmond Highway (Route 1) between Jeff Todd Way/Mount Vernon Memorial Highway and the Alexandria southern city limits will be permanently reduced from 45 mph to 35 mph to optimize safety and operations for pedestrians, bicyclists, drivers and transit users, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation and Fairfax County Department of Transportation.

Signs displaying the new 35 mph speed limit will be installed May 23 along the approximately seven-mile stretch of Richmond Highway.

In August 2021, after hearing from communities along the Richmond Highway corridor, VDOT began a study assessing the current 45 mph speed limit, with two public information meetings held in November 2021 and July 2022. The study team formally recommended lowering the speed limit to 35 mph between Jeff Todd Way/Mount Vernon Memorial Highway and the Alexandria southern city limits due in part to the segment’s high crash rate. The team also found that Richmond Highway between Buckman Road/Mount Vernon Highway and the Alexandria southern city limits had a higher incidence of pedestrian/bicycle crashes and speed-related crashes compared to other sections of Richmond Highway.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
