Mount Vernon Community School’s principal Liza Burrell-Aldana was named by The Washington Post as the region’s Principal of the Year.
In a profile of Burrell-Aldana, the Post described her cheerful approach to overcoming obstacles, an attitude that ripples out across the faculty and students.
Burrell-Aldana became principal of the school in 2017 and the Post cited her leadership steering the school through the coronavirus pandemic and a building renovation, all while student test scores climbed at the school and she maintained staff consistency in a time of high turnover.
According to the Post:
Since becoming principal in 2017, Burrell-Aldana has led her school through a global pandemic and a building renovation, all while improving student test scores and maintaining her staff during a time of high turnover in education.
Her colleagues credit her ability to communicate effectively. “She’s calm. She’s cool. She communicates a clear message. You don’t have to have a decoder ring to know what she’s thinking,” Porterfield said.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!
The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!
What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
