A report filed ahead of a School Board meeting tonight (Thursday) shows the School Law Enforcement Partnership (SLEP) is recommending the city continue funding School Resource Officers (SROs), WUSA9 first reported.

SLEP, a partnership set up to advise the leadership of Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS), filed a report with recommendations that is docketed for review at tonight’s meeting.

There is a long history of SROs being defunded — then refunded — in a tug-of-war between the School Board and City Council. Adding to the chaos, some SROs were later replaced after an allegation of alleged sexually inappropriate conversations.

The report filed to the School Board shows the SLEP voted to recommend continuing to fund the SRO program.

“SROs are part of a holistic program, and will not independently solve safety concerns — but they belong in the mix, and will require continued funding at either current or elevated levels,” a presentation of the report said. “Removing SROs would send a message to many families and community members that ACPS does not take seriously the violence that has occurred at regular intervals in the last year.”

There are seventeen recommendations in total in the presentation, which is available online.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
