JUST IN: ACPS launches superintendent search ahead of Melanie Kay-Wyatt’s resignation

Alexandria City Public Schools is officially searching for a new superintendent ahead of Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt’s resignation on Oct. 1.

The search process launched Monday (June 1), about two months after Kay-Wyatt submitted her resignation. The Alexandria City School Board has brought on executive search firm Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates to lead the recruitment effort.

According to the job listing, the new superintendent is sought to start on or around Oct. 1. The next superintendent will lead a diverse school district with 18 schools and over 16,000 students who come from 118 countries. The annual salary for the position is around $305,000.

The job listing outlines what the School Board is seeking in a candidate:

“The ACPS Board seeks an innovative educational leader who ensures an excellent educational experience for every student in the division and is ready to become an integral part of the community. The successful applicant must have demonstrated exemplary educational leadership experience in a community with similar strengths, demographics, and challenges.”

The ACPS community can provide input on the search in a survey open from June 1 to 12 and at two community engagement sessions. By late June, ACPS will release a leadership profile outlining characteristics sought in the next superintendent.

Applications will be accepted through Aug. 12. Finalists will be interviewed in September, and the new superintendent will be announced in October.
