Braddock Road Metro kiss-and-ride overhaul heads to public hearing next week

The proposed redesign of the kiss-and-ride area at the Braddock Road Metro to accommodate future redevelopment is heading to a public hearing Monday, April 20.

The 21-space kiss-and-ride area at the 3.6-acre Metro-owned site would be replaced with 14 to 18 pickup and drop-off spaces on E. Braddock Road and N. West Street. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority proposes to reconfigure the five-bay bus loop at the existing location, eliminating a recirculation lane and adding a future signal where the bus bay meets E. Braddock Road. The 65 bicycle racks, six double-sided bicycle lockers and an on-site Capital Bikeshare station would remain.

An environmental evaluation released by WMATA says the changes are expected to add one to two and a half minutes to bus travel times depending on the time of day. WMATA does not expect significant roadway traffic impacts, though it acknowledges existing traffic congestion in the area around the station.

“The proposed transit modifications will not inherently generate additional buses or pick-up/drop-off activity, but there will be a small amount of additional bus trips on the localized roadway network making the counterclockwise circulation movement around the site due to the elimination of the recirculation lane,” the report says.

According to WMATA, the changes are proposed to allow for mixed-use development with housing and increase ridership at the Braddock Road Metro. The reconfiguration would be coordinated with a future developer, selected through a future WMATA solicitation process.

If the project advances, WMATA says Alexandria’s development review process would provide additional opportunities for public comment.

Public comments on the Braddock Road reconfiguration proposal are being accepted through 5 p.m. April 30.
