The City of Alexandria is expected to provide an update next week about ongoing plans to replace the Old Town Pool.
City staff will share updates on the project’s design and construction timeline, and attendees will be able to provide feedback at the meeting, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, March 5 at the Oswald Durant Center (1605 Cameron Street).
The $12.5 million project aims to refresh the pool and facilities, which were constructed in 1975 and are “nearing the end of [their] usability,” according to a presentation given to the Board of Architectural Review last month.
The proposal calls for replacing the 7,400-square-foot pool with an 8,000-square-foot swimming spot with eight lanes, a 25-meter lap pool and a dive well. The updated site would also include a family pool area, spray features, a climbing wall, a basketball hoop and volleyball nets.
“The project will fully replace the current pool and bathhouse with a modern facility designed to better serve our community today and in the future,” the city said in an announcement today (Wednesday).
Planning has been underway since 2012, when the city published an Aquatic Facilities Study recommending the aging pool’s replacement.
Arlington-based RRMM architects is the project designer and engineer, and the project is funded through the city’s Capital Improvement Program.
The city is currently in the design phase, which is expected to last through this fall, according to the city website. Construction is anticipated from winter or spring 2027 through spring or summer 2028, with substantial completion by summer or fall 2028.
