Four Mile Run Kayak Launch set to open this week following delays

After more than four months of delays, the Four Mile Run Kayak Launch is expected to be open for use by the end of this week.

The project promises the “first public ADA-accessible Potomac River paddling access” through a city partnership with the Four Mile Run Conservatory Foundation. The foundation announced the end of construction on social media yesterday (Tuesday) and said there will be a grand opening in the spring.

Construction started in March for the raised boardwalk from the bike trail that leads down to a gangway and floating dock. Alexandria previously listed a July completion date, although weather conditions over the summer and “recurring tidal inundations” pushed that date back to September, according to the city.

The launch cost more than half a million dollars and is located along Four Mile Run Park near Alexandria Toyota at 3750 Richmond Highway.

The design for the launch was completed in 2021, and the foundation received environmental regulatory approvals and permits from the state within three years, according to the city.
