The owner of the dilapidated former Potomac River Generating Station in Old Town North will conduct guided tours of the property next month.

HRP Group bought the former power plant in 2020, and plans to convert the 18-acre site at 1300 N. Royal Street into a mixed-use development. The guided tours will be held Friday, Oct. 3, and Saturday, Oct. 4, and “will give community members the chance to meet the project team and visit the site, which has been inaccessible to Old Town North for decades,” according to HRP Group.

The free hour-long tours will be held at 9, 10, and 11 a.m. Children under the age of 10 are not allowed due to safety concerns.

“Tours will last approximately one hour and require walking on uneven terrain,” HRP Group said. “Participants must wear comfortable, closed-toed shoes and remain with their tour guide at all times.”

The public has been granted access to the plant with multiple tours over the last several years.

According to HRP Group:

Visitors will also hear about the vision for transforming the area into a vibrant, welcoming, and walkable waterfront community featuring over 10 acres of new and improved publicly available open space with access to the waterfront. The project will introduce new art spaces, retail, commercial, and residential opportunities connected by a network of bike paths and pedestrian walkways.

Please contact HRPInfoMidatlantic@hilcoglobal.com regarding any accessibility needs and HRP will make all efforts to provide accommodations.

As previously reported, the power plant shut down in 2012, and the site requires extensive remediation efforts after leaky storage tanks bled pollutants into the soil.

The city approved plans to redevelop the site into a mixed-use property starting in 2017, and continuing to preliminary plans submitted to the city last month.
