The Little Theatre of Alexandria will present Neil Simon’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama “Lost in Yonkers” from Sept. 6-27, offering audiences a poignant look at family dynamics during World War II-era America.
The production, directed by Chantal Plante and produced by Eleanore Tapscott, tells the story of two young brothers sent to live with their intimidating grandmother in Yonkers, N.Y., in 1942 following their mother’s death. The Tony Award-winning play explores how Grandmother Kurnitz’s harsh demeanor has affected her adult children, including the boys’ father who lacks self-esteem, their speech-impaired Aunt Gert, gangster Uncle Louie and childlike Aunt Bella.
Simon’s acclaimed work balances humor with heartbreak as it examines how trauma and survival instincts can damage family relationships across generations. The play is presented through arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French Inc.
Performances run Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $26 for reserved seating and are available at thelittletheatre.com or by calling the box office at 703-683-0496. The theater notes that all ticket sales are final, with limited exchanges possible for regular-priced tickets, subject to a $5 fee.
