Cancer survivor, Komen leader to share children’s book at Alexandria event

Paula Schneider, a breast cancer survivor and leader with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, will discuss her new children’s book “Love Stays Strong” during a Sept. 3 event at Old Town Books.

The 7 p.m. presentation will feature Schneider alongside Karin Purugganan, a licensed professional counselor in Alexandria. The event will take place at Old Town Books, 130 S Royal St.

“Love Stays Strong” addresses how families can navigate serious illness together, with a mother explaining her changing body and health condition to her child. The book aims to provide comfort and guidance while reassuring children that family love remains constant despite life’s challenges.

Schneider, who serves as CEO of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and is a mother of two daughters, wrote the book drawing from her personal experience as a cancer survivor who also lost her mother to metastatic breast cancer. The book features illustrations by Nicole Wong, whose family was also affected by cancer.

“In a beautiful text that all families facing serious illness can relate to, a mother explains her own illness and changing body to her child,” according to promotional materials for the book.

Net proceeds from book sales will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, which has invested more than $3.6 billion in breast cancer research, advocacy and patient support since 1982. The organization reports these investments have helped reduce the breast cancer mortality rate by 44%.

The Komen Foundation was established in 1982 and continues its work in breast cancer research and support services. More information about the foundation is available at komen.org.

Review copies of the book are available upon request, and additional event details can be found through Old Town Books.
