🚨 You need to know

Alexandria residents were among nearly 600 people across the Washington region who used the free SoberRide service on Independence Day rather than risk driving home after drinking. The program, run by the nonprofit Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP), provided safe transportation throughout the area, including Alexandria, from 4:00 p.m. on July 4th through 4:00 a.m. on July 5th.

“For its hours of operation this Independence Day, this level of ridership translates into SoberRide removing a potential drunk driver from Greater Washington’s roadways nearly every 74 seconds,” said Kurt Erickson, WRAP’s president. The service was available to anyone 21 and older who downloaded the Lyft app and entered the promo code “SAFEJULY4TH25” for a free ride home.

Alexandria was explicitly included in the service area, along with other Northern Virginia communities in Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties. The program operates during traditionally high-risk periods when impaired driving incidents typically spike, helping keep local roads safer for all residents during holiday celebrations.

Since launching in 1991, WRAP’s SoberRide program has provided over 95,000 free, safe rides to individuals who would otherwise be driving drunk across the Washington metropolitan area. The organization also offers the service on other major holidays, including Super Bowl Sunday, St. Patrick’s Day, Halloween, and New Year’s Eve, continuing its mission to prevent drunk driving and keep local communities, such as Alexandria, safe.

The longtime Northern Virginia lawmaker emphasized his goal of moving sales “away from the illegal market on the street corner to behind an age-verified counter with tested products” as the commission works toward crafting new legislation for 2026.
