Michael & Son owner wants to open an Asian fusion restaurant across from Potomac Yard

The owner of a popular local home improvement business is getting into the restaurant game.

Michael & Son owner Basim Mansour is asking the city for approval to replace a 1940s-era convenience store with a 1,700-square-foot “fast casual restaurant with Asian foods with a Spanish and American influence.” That’s according to Mansour’s development special use permit request for the 6,600-square-foot property at 3314 Richmond Highway — across the street from Potomac Yard.

Development plans include five outdoor dining tables with four chairs apiece and a 10-space parking lot.

Mansour owns 50% of the business, with the rest evenly divided between partners Amgd Gende and Mohamed Chowdhury. The group bought the property at the corner of Richmond Highway and Montrose Avenue on May 12 for $1.75 million, and its value was previously assessed at $1.6 million in January, according to city land use records.

Gende and Chowdhury started as a food truck in 2024, when they were approached by Mansour, according to Washingtonian. The group is also looking to open a brick and mortar in Annandale.

The last day for public comment on the proposal is June 19.
