A brick warehouse in Old Town that served as a mess hall for soldiers during the Civil War is scheduled to reopen as a restaurant next month, Alexandria Living Magazine reported.

The elongated brick structure at 10 Duke Street was one of the last waterfront warehouses in Old Town, a building type that dominated the area in its heyday as a port. Murray Bonitt of Bonitt Builders told Alexandria Living Magazine that the original bricks and roof were taken apart, cleaned, and then put back together piece by piece.

The new restaurant, Cooper Mill, references the former mill at the site that created barrels for the Alexandria Flour Company, according to Alexandria Living Magazine.

In addition to the restaurant space, the building will have a market with grab-and-go items, tavern, and event area.

Cooper Mill is scheduled to open in early December.
