Notes: Tax relief for spouses of soldiers who died in the line of duty receives widespread support

In the midst of all the election news there was one piece that did not get much attention. Virginia voted on Tuesday to extend property tax exemptions to spouses married to a service member who dies in the line of duty.

The ballot question read:

Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended so that the tax exemption that is currently available to the surviving spouses of soldiers killed in action is also available to the surviving spouses of soldiers who died in the line of duty?

The ballot question received 93% of the vote, or 3.9 million total, compared to 7% who voted no, only around 288,361 people.

Interestingly: Alexandrians were slightly less favorable to the proposal. While 91% of locals supported the question (64,542 people), around 9% (6,567 people) voted against it.
