Russ Adams, a fixture of Alexandria’s online community as Del Ray’s weatherman, died on Oct. 31 after a battle with cancer.

Adams was a patent examiner and supervisor at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for 34 years before he retired in 2004.

While Adams’ bio noted that he’s been on the internet since 1994, Adams became a fixture of Alexandria’s online community in recent years after he started tweeting out weather information for Del Ray and covering weather on his website, Del Ray VA Weather.

It started as simple notifications for rain, but started moving into providing concrete data for rainfall, spreading rainfall predictions, lightning strike notifications and more.

Adams build an impressive following in Alexandria and beyond thanks to his wit and responsiveness to questions. After his death, tributes poured in from locals, from local reporters to Mayor Justin Wilson.
