Alexandria City Public Schools has taken a step forward in crafting school policy around artificial intelligence.
The district formed an “AI Impact team” earlier this summer, taking a proactive approach to determine how AI can be used to the benefit of the schools, a report said.
“This team is engaged in professional learning and outreach activities to create a division-specific AI implementation plan, including a philosophy, guiding principles, frameworks, and guidelines,” according to a report to the School Board.
According to the report:
The ACPS AI Impact Team was formed in the summer of 2024 with the following goals:
- Determine our AI philosophy and principles to guide future decision making around AI in ACPS
- Identify policy impacts
- Provide guidelines for staff and student use of AI in ACPS
The 12-member team includes superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt and district chief technology officer Elizabeth Hoover, as well as other district employees and school administrators.
After establishing such guidelines, the team will present its research at a January school board meeting, the report said.
The new team comes amid a wave of discussions in Alexandria about artificial intelligence, from a former Vice Mayor appointed to a statewide AI Task Force to Alexandria artists exploring “possibilities and perils” of AI.
