A roadway overhaul on S. Van Dorn Street and Eisenhower Avenue is heading to the City Council this week after 40 nearby residents signed an appeal.

The city’s plan is to reconfigure the area where S. Van Dorn Street intersects with Eisenhower Avenue and connects to Metro Road.

The plan is to relocate left-turn lanes on Metro Road and Van Dorn Street and install a new sidewalk on the south side of Eisenhower Avenue with a two-way bicycle/scooter lane on the north side of the street.

A concept design presentation said the plan is eventually to create a separate two-way bike path connecting to the Holmes Run Trail. The changes would also come with a speed limit reduction from 35 miles per hour to 25 miles per hour.

The concept plan was approved by the Traffic and Parking Board on July 22, but the appeal from 37 nearby households asks the City Council to overturn that approval.

“Primary concerns related to traffic congestion and impacts to Metro Road,” the staff presentation summarized.

At the Traffic and Parking Board meeting, most of the comments were in support of the changes, particularly from a group of pedestrian safety advocates called Alexandria Families for Safe Streets.

The project is scheduled for review (item 5) at a City Council public hearing on Saturday, Oct. 19
