The Washington Metrorail Safety Commission (WMSC) shed more light on a miscommunication in June that could have resulted in a crash, WJLA reported.

On June 20, the WMSC said a northbound Blue Line train with passengers received a command that they could go as fast as 55 miles per hour when approaching a switch when they should have been commanded to completely stop because a Yellow Line train was also approaching the switch.

As the Blue Line train approached, the operator saw a red signal and pulled on the emergency brakes.

The WMSC determined the cause of the error was that, during routine testing, employees accidentally overrode the Automatic Train Protection system that keeps trains from colliding. WJLA reported that the safety commission and Metro agreed to stop doing testing when passengers are riding trains and to only use out-of-service sections of track.
