Just a few days before the June 18 primary, former Mayor Allison Silberberg wrote into the Alexandria Gazette to throw her support behind Vice Mayor Amy Jackson’s mayoral campaign.

Mayor Justin Wilson announced in December that he wouldn’t run for reelection and three Alexandrians have thrown their hats into the ring to replace him.

Jackson is running against City Council member Alyia Gaskins, whom Wilson has endorsed, and real estate developer Steven Peterson.

Silberberg was mayor from 2016 to 2019, during which time she frequently clashed with Wilson, who was vice mayor at the time. Wilson unseated Silberberg in the 2018 election, then fended off a challenge from Silberberg in 2021.

Silberberg wrote in the Alexandria Gazette this week that Jackson is “willing to listen to residents’ concerns and act accordingly,” citing Jackson’s support of the “Stop the Arena” movement and her opposition to the Duke Street slaughterhouse and Seminary Road changes.

“While we may not agree with every position a candidate takes, it’s important to have a mayor who is open-minded, listens, and seeks common ground,” Silberberg wrote. “These are good and necessary qualities to have in a mayor. Amy is that candidate.”
