Survey data for weapon detector pilot (image via ACPS)

A survey of Alexandria students and parents found most respondents want weapons detector systems inside schools permanently, WUSA9 reported.

The survey asked the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) community several questions about the weapons abatement pilot program. Of those surveyed, 508 believed the weapons abatement program should continue, 209 felt neutral about it, and 358 did not want the program to continue.

Parents were the main drivers behind strong agreement that the program should continue, voting overwhelmingly in favor, while student opinions were more mixed.

Respondents also said they believed the pilot program supports a safter school environment and want the program implemented at elementary schools — something staff does not recommend. They were more mixed on whether or not they feel safer at the school.

ACPS said there’s been a 71% drop in weapons-related incidents at the schools since the detectors were installed.

The school board is set to vote on making the weapon detectors permeant at a meeting on Thursday, June 6.
