Zebra reported that King Street Cats’ ongoing partnership with an animal rescue in Afghanistan has a new goal: to bring two cats, Jimbo and Elfa, to the United States.
It’s an arduous trip for the pets, but since 2019, King Street Cats and Kabul Small Animal Rescue (KSAR) have been working on taking in, sheltering, and finding homes for two dozen cats brought in from Afghanistan.
KSAR, a veterinary clinic and animal shelter in Afghanistan’s capital, currently has 450 animals — from injured animals to ones orphaned on the streets. Zebra reported that 300 of those are dogs, 110 are cats, and there’s a variety of sheep, rabbits, peacocks and more.
KSAR previously airlifted animals out of the country after the Taliban took over in 2021, partly because the shelter is run by a woman and partly because the Taliban reportedly considers dogs unclean, according to Mother Jones.
The newest pair making the trip are Jimbo and Elfa. According to KSAR:
They’re both neutered males, just under a year old, and are microchipped, vaccinated, and healthy. They are energetic boys and get along well with other cats, but are still quite scared of dogs. We can only adopt out to indoor-only households. Elfa is ginger and white, Jimbo is gray tabby and white, and they are delightfully affectionate and playful.
KSAR is currently raising funds to cover plane fees, stopovers, customs, export and import frees and more.
