Bird, one of four electric scooter operators in Alexandria, has filed for bankruptcy.

The Miami-based company is reportedly struggling to survive after losing more than $430 million since the end of 2021.

What this means for the Bird scooters around the region is unclear. Scooter use plummeted during Covid but rebounded to near-2019 levels last year.

The city engaged in extensive zoning and policy discussions about electric scooters around the city over the last few years, an argument that may be moot if electric scooter companies continue going bankrupt.
