The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) unveiled some concepts for what new Express Lanes across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge might look like, Patch reported.
Widening the bridge is not under consideration and the plan notes that it’s not feasible to relocate a concrete barrier between thru and local lanes — both of which limit VDOT’s options for express lanes.
The proposal is to add two express lanes onto the bridge immediately, with the long-term option of turning one of those into a rail line should Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority ever be so inclined.
The plans are headed through a public engagement and review process this fall before going to Federal Highway Administration late next year.
