Eries Interiors, a new shop focusing on interior design and home decor, is opening today in Old Town.

The new shop is at 101 S. St Asaph Street just south of King Street, between Bluemercury and Madame Coco. The store is named after the Erie Canal near where co-founders Jessica Moak and Elena Rall grew up.

The much-needed replacement of Alexandria’s most-strikable bridge could come with some benefits to the cramped sidewalk beneath.

At a City Council meeting last week, City Council member Sarah Bagley said the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) is moving forward with the replacement of a pair of bridges that passes over King Street and Commonwealth Avenue.

Three years after purchasing the building, Mudhouse Coffee Roasters could finally be moving into 1119 King Street.

The owner filed a new special use permit this week to renovate the existing retail/mercantile space into use as a coffee shop. The shop will have 20-25 maximum patrons, according to the permit.

The 700 block of Cameron Street will be closed for part of next week during the day because of construction nearby.

The City of Alexandria said in a release that the 700 block of Cameron Street will be closed from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Old Town Books Junior recently opened at 130 S. Royal Street, and its owner says that last week’s first story time under the new indoor reading tree was packed.

“It looked like a nightclub for toddlers in here,” store owner Ally Kirkpatrick told us. “We soft-launched last week and had more than 40 families come out for story time.”

Alexandria city staff have been ordered to evaluate turning the 200 block of King Street into a pedestrian zone.

Mayor Justin Wilson and City Council Member John Taylor Chapman asked staff to create a pilot program to turn the 200 block of King Street into a pedestrian zone. The move would effectively eliminate cars from the main thoroughfare next door to City Hall’s Market Square (301 King Street) all the way down to the waterfront.

Local theatre company MetroStage is celebrating the birthday of James Baldwin with a show about the acclaimed author’s decision to flee America.

The show, Citizen James, is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 30, at the Lyceum (201 South Washington Street).
