Gade Wins Primary, Faces Warner in November Election — “Gade handily defeated Thomas A. Speciale II and Alissa A. Baldwin in Tuesday’s Republican primary with about two-thirds of the votes cast statewide. No Fireworks: Alexandria’s Birthday Celebration to be Virtual Next Month

Alexandria is turning 271 years old next month, but due to coronavirus concerns the city’s annual massive birthday event will be virtual.

The event, which also celebrates the countrywide July 4 festivities, draws thousands of residents and visitors along Oronoco Bay Park to receive birthday cupcakes; listen to the city’s poet laureate; and ooh and ahh at a fireworks show over the Potomac River as the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra (ASO) plays the 1812 Overture — with actual howitzer blast punctuations by the Presidential Salute Battery of the 3d United States Infantry Regiment.

Beyer to Introduce Legislation for Law Enforcement to Wear Identifying Badges — “We don’t do secret police in the United States of America. I will introduce House legislation in the next few days to require uniformed federal officers to identify themselves by wearing badges. Next step will be working for broad support in the House. Developer Gets Financing to Build Apartments in West End — “Monday Properties announced Tuesday it secured a $66.8M construction loan from EagleBank and broke ground on the development at 2000 North Beauregard St. The project is planned to include 300 units in six to seven stories of wood-frame construction atop a two-level concrete podium. The apartments will be wrapped around an internal, 420-space parking garage.” [Bisnow]

The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra Will Reopen in October With Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9

Here’s something to look forward to: When the pandemic is over, the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra plans to kick off its next season with Beethoven’s triumphant Symphony No. 9.

That concert is planned for Saturday, October 3, at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center, but in the meantime, the 85-person orchestra just canceled the remainder of its performances for its 76th season, including on May 16 and 17 and the “Brandenburgs & Brew” concert on June 12.
