Nestled within an industrial area of Alexandria’s Eisenhower West, a seemingly nondescript startup with a small sign near its front door is revolutionizing wireless communication in challenging environments around the world.

Saltenna moved to Alexandria from its previous headquarters in McLean last August, and its 20 employees have been using its proprietary plasmonic wave technology to help various U.S. government agencies communicate in dense jungles, underwater and through metal. The technology essentially shrinks light waves down to a nanoscale and guides them on various surfaces via an antenna.

Developer proposes converting office complex into townhomes on Eisenhower Avenue

A plan to convert a two-story office complex into a residential community with 37 townhomes on Eisenhower Avenue is headed to the Planning Commission in April.

D.C.-area homebuilder Tri Pointe Homes is asking for permission to convert property at 4701 and 4801 Eisenhower Avenue into a residential development with 80 back-to-back units and 24% ground-level open space. The proposal, considered “phase 2” of the existing Eisenhower Pointe housing development, is expected to go before the commission on Tuesday, April 7.

Alexandria police respond to accidental shooting in Eisenhower West

The Alexandria Police Department responded to an incident late this morning (Friday) in which a man reportedly shot himself in the leg in Eisenhower West.

The 43-year-old man told officers he accidentally shot himself while placing a firearm into his pocket, according to dispatches from APD. The man self-reported the incident to police around 11:20 a.m. from the 2800 block of Telek Place.
