A new “passport”-inspired promotion will encourage Alexandria residents to shop locally along the Duke Street corridor.
The City of Alexandria is planning a Duke Street Business Passport Program for businesses within a half-mile of Duke Street. The upcoming program would track shoppers’ passport progress with QR codes and award $25 gift certificates to five participants who visit the most passport businesses.
Two community workshops remain this week for Alexandria residents to learn more about plans to develop Duke Street and provide feedback to city leaders.
The Duke Street Land Use Plan is hosting workshops from 6:30-8 p.m. tonight (Wednesday) and tomorrow at the Patrick Henry Recreation Center at 4653 Taney Avenue. The first workshop was held last night (Tuesday).
The Planning Commission will host a work session tomorrow (Tuesday) on a draft plan for the future of Duke Street.
Still in its infancy, the Duke Street Land Use Plan is intended to guide city officials in the development of the Duke Street corridor from the former Landmark Mall to Alexandria Union Station. The document is expected to be ready for City Council consideration and adoption from late 2026 to early 2027, according to the city.
The city of Alexandria will showcase progress and accept feedback for the ongoing Duke Street Land Use Plan during an open house next week.
The open house will feature informational “interactive stations,” and attendees can “engage with staff about specific opportunities they see on the corridor” from Alexandria Union Station to Van Dorn Street.
Alexandria has set a deadline of Oct. 23 (Thursday) to give feedback on the Duke Street Land Use Plan.
When finished, the document will guide city officials in the development of the Duke Street Corridor from the former Landmark Mall to Alexandria Union Station. Last month, residents weighed in on draft principles for the document.
Alexandria’s Department of Planning and Zoning has a full docket at its upcoming bi-monthly virtual community meeting.

Alexandria is updating its Duke Street Land Use Plan, and a community meeting at Patrick Henry Recreation Center (4653 Taney Avenue) on June 9 will kick things off.
This update will refresh the plan for the area from Alexandria Union Station to Van Dorn Street – the first major revision since 1992.
