Alexandria is updating its Duke Street Land Use Plan, and a community meeting at Patrick Henry Recreation Center (4653 Taney Avenue) on June 9 will kick things off.
This update will refresh the plan for the area from Alexandria Union Station to Van Dorn Street – the first major revision since 1992.
“Launching in Summer 2025, this community planning process will update the comprehensive land use plan for the Duke Street Corridor from Alexandria Union Station to Van Dorn Street at the future Landmark/West End development,” the city shares on the project’s website.
The kick-off meeting will feature a presentation, Q&A, and an open house where residents can chat with city staff. It’s set for 7 to 8:30 p.m., with options to attend in person or virtually.
The meeting location is accessible via the FREE DASH Bus Route 30. Food, childcare, and language interpretation in Spanish and Amharic will be available. Requests for interpretation in other languages must be made to Christian Brandt, Urban Planner, before Wednesday, May 28: Christian.brandt@alexandriava.
This planning process will tackle a range of topics, including land use, environmental and climate concerns, equity, getting around town, pedestrian safety, parks, and affordable housing.
City staff will host events along Duke Street over the summer to gather more input. Look for them at Ewald Park, Ben Brenman Park, and The Shoppes at Foxchase.
