Debate night has arrived.

The presidential debate between Vice President Kamalah Harris and former President Donald Trump is tonight, and we’ve found a number of Alexandria local businesses that will be viewing the event on televisions behind the bar.

“NOT GOING BACK” and “CHILDLESS CAT LADIES VOTE” are among a flurry of chalk messages adorning the concrete barriers at a closed-off Alexandria park near the home of Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance.

Pieces of chalk have been left near the Jersey barriers at Judy Lowe Park (7 E. Del Ray Avenue), which is near Vance’s home in Del Ray. The messages have been made recently, as the city announced late last month that the park would be closed when Vance returned home from the campaign.

The Judy Lowe Neighborhood Park (7 E Del Ray Avenue) is reopening… kind of.

Around a week after the City of Alexandria closed the park at the request of the Secret Service, the City said the park is reopening with a “modified schedule with intermittent closures until further notice.”

Del Ray residents did not couch their feelings about losing a neighborhood park to JD Vance’s Secret Service protection.

The City of Alexandria announced last week that, at the request of the Secret Service, it would be closing Jude Lowe Neighborhood Park in Del Ray “until further notice.” The unit block of E. Del Ray Avenue between Commonwealth Avenue and Clyde Avenue is also restricted to resident traffic only and there will be no on-street parking on the east side of the 2200 block of Commonwealth Avenue.

One way or another, Lauren Fisher is sticking around Del Ray.

Fisher started her first one-year term as president of the Del Ray Business Association (DRBA) at the height of the pandemic in 2021. Since then she’s rebuilt the association’s offerings, with virtual and distance-related neighborhood events transitioning back to in-person get-togethers. Those live in-person events include monthly first Thursday neighborhood parties on Mount Vernon Avenue, bar crawls, contests, farmer’s markets, a Halloween parade and festivals that bring tens of thousands of people to the neighborhood.

We have really bad news for the commentor on the story about JD Vance becoming Trump’s running mate who said “I hope secret service doesn’t close the Judy Lowe Park to expand the security buffer!”

The Secret Service is closing Judy Lowe Park to expand the security buffer.
