(Updated 8:10 a.m. on 12/15/20) If you’re a cat-owner that felt left out by the Barkhaus’ ugly sweater party for dogs, the new Mount Purrnon Cat Cafe and Wine Bar (109 S. Alfred Street) has some purrfect retribution.

The cafe’s cat ugly sweater party is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 19, from 7-9 p.m. The event is planned to include 15-20 cats in positively hideous holiday sweaters. Cookies and milk will be included.

Need a new best friend? The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria says that their number of pet adoptions is up this year.

“It’s a very stressful time and a pet can really be a companion, they can provide support,” Gina Hardter, a spokesperson with the AWLA told ALXnow. “Even though this is a terrible time it’s been a wonderful time to show us just what is important in our lives, and one of those things is the unconditional love that a pet can give.”

Felines Chloe and Emmie are bonded for life, and the dynamic duo are looking for a new family through the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

“Four-year-old felines Emmie (orange) and Chloe are ready to double your pleasure and double your fun, because this dynamic duo of bonded kitties are looking for their new family…together,” said AWLA spokesperson Gina Hardter. “While their looks couldn’t be more opposite, their purr-sonalities are pretty similar: both girls are sweet, outgoing and go out of their way to get pets from new people.”

The Halloween spooky season isn’t quite over. Tomorrow is Friday, Nov. 13, and Mount Purrnon Cat Cafe and Wine Bar (109 S. Alfred Street) wants you to spend the unlucky day watching House on Haunted Hill with a black cat.

“Black cats and popcorn are the only way to celebrate Friday the 13th,” the cafe said on its Facebook page. “Watch House on Haunted Hill and spend some time with our resident kitties. Popcorn and soda (or tea, coffee) included in ticket price!”

Fry, a three-year-old ginger tabby, is this week’s Pet Pick from the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

“Fry is a well-traveled gent, having lived as far away as Hawaii, but he’s loving life so far in Virginia,” said Gina Hardter, spokesperson for the AWLA. “Fry is an affectionate guy who needs some time to explore his surroundings, but once he’s comfortable, get ready for a very sweet lap kitty.”

Don’t let his intimidating gaze and sleek demeanor fool you, staff at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria say that Dana is a love bug.

“While young and active, Dana is also an affectionate love bug,” said Audrey Alessi, a spokesperson for the AWLA. “Crouch down to greet him and he’ll put his paws on your lap so you can more easily pet him.”
