Alexandria Planning Commission to review 3-year extension for contested apartment project

The developer behind a seven-story apartment building in the Braddock area is asking the city for an extension of its developmental special use permit (via City of Alexandria)

The Alexandria Planning Commission will review a three-year extension in October for a controversial 180-unit apartment building near the Braddock Road Metro station that has faced years of delays and community opposition.

In June, the city council deferred a decision to extend the DSUP for the one-acre project at 727 N. West St. until its city council public hearing on October 18. The deferral gave developer West Street Acquisitions several months to discuss stormwater issues with the city and conduct more community conversations with neighbors. The plan will first go to the Planning Commission for review on Oct. 9.

The developer behind a seven-story apartment building in the Braddock area is asking the city for an extension of its developmental special use permit (via City of Alexandria)

Alexandria City Council deferred a decision to extend the development special use permit (DSUP) for a seven-story, 180-unit mixed-use apartment building across the street from the Braddock Road Metro station.

The Council, last Saturday, unanimously extended the DSUP for the one-acre project at 727 N. West Street until its public hearing on October 18 (Saturday), giving developer West Street Acquisitions a few months to discuss stormwater issues with the city and conduct more community conversations with neighbors.

With 167 senior residents and a police officer being forced out of the Ladrey Senior High-Rise by the end of the year, Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority CEO Erik C. Johnson says there’s actually an opportunity to capitalize on the situation.

“This comes down to whether or not the city is going to support seniors the way that we want to support seniors,” Johnson told ALXnow. “We’re not asking the city to finance it, nor is the city taking a first position loss in the event that something goes wrong.”

The developer of a seven-story, 180-unit apartment building across the street from the Braddock Road Metro station is asking the city for an extension of its development special use permit.

West Street Acquisitions says a number of important steps have been made on the one-acre project at 727 N. West Street, which was denied by the City Council in March 2021 and then approved two months later. After some delays, including a legal battle with a neighbor citing city regulations prohibiting the Council from reviewing a denied application for a year, work on the four-year-old project has been slow, and the development special use permit is about to expire.

The suspect in the assault of the station manager at the Braddock Road Metro station skipped his arraignment Thursday morning (Oct. 31).

Alexandria Circuit Court Judge Rebecca J. Wade issued a bench warrant against Martinez Juan Robertson of Woodbridge for not appearing in court. Robertson was arrested by Metro Transit Police on the morning of Oct. 16 — two days after the incident — and charged with assault and battery, a misdemeanor.

Metro Transit Police seeking suspect in Metro employee stabbing at Braddock station

The Metro Transit Police have put out a picture of a man suspected in the stabbing of an employee of the transit system at the Braddock Road Metro Station on Sunday morning.

Metro Transit Police said an employee was attacked and sustained a significant injury. Metro Transit Police said the incident occurred around 10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13.

Former Waterfront Park artwork being moved to permanent home at Braddock Road Metro station

Artwork formerly located at Waterfront Park and exploring the complex relationship between Alexandria’s economy and slavery is making a return: this time to a new permanent home at the Braddock Road Metro Station.

The artwork “Wrought, Knit, Labors, Legacies” by artist Olalekan Jeyifous opened in Waterfront Park in March 2020 and is inspired by “Alexandria’s rich and complicated industrial and merchant history.” The artwork was relocated to the Old Town Pool at 1609 Cameron Street, but the location was temporary until a more permanent location could be found, in part due to 2-5 years of construction planned at the Old Town Pool.

Despite blood trail, no injuries reported after shots fired in Braddock area Wednesday night

No arrests were made or injuries reported after a hail of gunfire was reported in the Braddock neighborhood of Alexandria on Wednesday night, according to the Alexandria Police Department.

Multiple 911 calls were made at around 8:40 p.m. with witnesses describing a man firing a gun approximately 25 times in the area of N. Fayette and Wythe Streets. The suspect was then seen getting into a gray four-door sedan with another suspect, the driver, which then sped south down N. Fayette Street and the east on Pendleton Street, according to dispatch reports.

WMATA is having a pretty tough week, with bus lines on the chopping block and ten stations facing possible closure — including, awkwardly, the new Potomac Yard Metro station that’s a central part of plans for a new arena.

To make matters worse, it comes on the 40th birthday of three Alexandria Yellow Line stations.
