Local nonprofit Housing Alexandria said it will break ground on a new 474-unit affordable housing project in Arlandria this summer at the intersection of Mount Vernon Avenue and Glebe Road.

The project — a pair of buildings the nonprofit announced will be called Sansé and Naja — will create 474 units of affordable housing, 36,000 square feet of commercial space and a two-level underground parking garage. All of the units will be affordable for households making up to 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI) with 105 units set aside as deeply affordable — available to those making 40% AMI.

(Updated 2:15 p.m.) The Alexandria Police Department is responding to reports of a bank robbery at the Wells Fargo on the 3500 block of Mount Vernon Avenue in the Arlandria neighborhood.

Scanner traffic indicated the call for the robbery came in around 11:54 a.m. There were no injuries and no weapons reported in connection to the robbery.

(Updated 9:30 a.m.) Another day, another massive power outage in Alexandria. This time, there’s a corvid to blame.

There were around 4,251 residents in a stretch of Alexandria from the Braddock neighborhood up to Potomac Yard and Lynhaven without power this morning, according to Dominion Energy’s power outage map, though as of 9:20 a.m. the largest outage has been restored.

The West Glebe Road bridge partially reopened yesterday, though pedestrian and bicycle traffic will have to wait to make use of the bridge.

The bridge was previously in a severely deteriorated state, necessitating partial closures over the years until the bridge fully closed last summer.

Chris Issak, John Waters and Judy Collins are just a few of the dozens of famous artists who petitioned the Alexandria Planning Commission and City Council to approve The Birchmere‘s Special Use Permit request to keep up its flashy new 5-foot-by-2.5-foot digital sign along Mount Vernon Avenue in Arlandria.

The Planning Commission approved the request 7-0 on Tuesday, and it now goes to City Council. Planning Commission Chair Nathan Macek said that the letters with all of the supporting signatures would be “an excellent auction item.”

Alexandria has just been hit with an outage that’s knocked out power to a large swath of the city’s Arlandria and Parkfairfax neighborhoods.

According to the Dominion Energy website, 3,240 residents are without power in Arlandria west of Mount Vernon Avenue, as well as Parkfairfax and parts of North Ridge and Shirlington.

Alexandria’s balmy winter has made a few of its parking lots prime locations for car meetups.

Car enthusiasts, car owners, their friends and children hung out for nearly four hours on Thursday night in the parking lot at 251 W. Glebe Road — near the intersection with Mount Vernon Avenue.

A 21-year-old Arlington man faces multiple charges and is being held without bond after last Friday’s shooting in Arlandria.

Tyayre Reynolds was charged with malicious wounding, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and use of a firearm in commission of a felony, according to the Alexandria Police Department. He was arrested by the Arlington Police Department in Arlington, and APD will not disclose the date and time of his arrest.

A suspect in last Friday’s shooting in Arlandria has been arrested, according to the Alexandria Police Department (APD).

The arrest was first reported by Patch, although APD did not release the identity of the suspect, when the suspect was arrested or what the suspect was charged with. APD reportedly received assistance in the arrest from the Arlington Police Department.

No arrests were made after a man was pistol-whipped in Arlandria on Monday night, according to the Alexandria Police Department.

APD was dispatched to the 4100 block of Mount Vernon Avenue at around 10:30 p.m., and found an adult male with slight injuries. The man refused medical assistance, according to police.
