Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) leadership presented some recommendations for a school safety plan to City Council members, but faced some pushback that the process is moving too slowly and occasionally missing the point.

ACPS leadership presented interim Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt’s recommendations for a School Law Enforcement Partnership (SLEP) in a joint City Council/School Board meeting yesterday. Broadly, the recommendations emphasize continued funding of school resource officers along with a reexamination of protecting student confidentiality and new de-escalation strategies.


No arrests were made after a stolen car crashed into another car and the front yard of a home in Alexandria’s Potomac West neighborhood early Monday morning, according to the Alexandria Police Department.

Police were dispatched at around 1 a.m. to the 200 block of Tennessee Avenue after a silver Toyota Corolla with Maryland license plates allegedly fled police at high speed and crashed into a parked car and into the front yard of a home, damaging the railing to the front steps. Police determined that the car was reported stolen in Alexandria.

The Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail has mapped all 18 miles of the Mount Vernon Trail on Google Street View.


(Updated at 4:40 p.m.) An Alexandria man is being held without bond after allegedly carjacking a DASH bus in the West End last Thursday night.

Lorenzo Johnson, 33, was arrested after allegedly carjacking the bus near the intersection of Duke Street and Quaker Road. The incident occurred just before 10 p.m. No weapons were used and no one was injured in the incident, according to the Alexandria Police Department.


Alexandria’s balmy winter has made a few of its parking lots prime locations for car meetups.

Car enthusiasts, car owners, their friends and children hung out for nearly four hours on Thursday night in the parking lot at 251 W. Glebe Road — near the intersection with Mount Vernon Avenue.

This week continued to see the fallout of a fatal shooting in the Lynhaven neighborhood last Friday.

Junior Espinal-Calix, a 19-year-old Alexandria resident, was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter after fatally shooting 21-year-old Nabel Chávez.


Healthcare non-profit Neighborhood Health is hitching its wagon to the great West End migration as it joins several city services in a new ‘West End City Hall‘ at the Mark Center.

The building at 4850 Mark Center Drive, officially the Redella S. “Del” Pepper Community Resource Center, will be a new hub for offices like the Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS) and the Alexandria Health Department.
